Closed-loop quality management: trace from complaint down to the batch.

Presented by: Apus QMS team
14/10/2025 · 3 hrs

Quality is often seen as a final inspection at the end of the line — but the webinar argues that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Real quality is a closed loop, and that loop only closes when a customer complaint can be connected back to the exact conditions that produced the defect.

The speaker walks through the difference between “detection” and “prevention”. When QMS is separate from production, a business can only block defects that have already happened. When the two share one data layer, a defective product can be traced back to the material batch, machine, shift and operating parameters — turning guesswork into root cause.

From root cause, the webinar shows how the system detects patterns: if a supplier or a machine is consistently tied to defects, the data reveals that pattern, and quality control shifts from blocking goods to eliminating the source. This is where metrics (such as defect rate by batch or by machine) become useful to act on, rather than just to report.

The final part covers recall and audit: when everything is recorded on one data layer, the impact scope of a given batch can be determined in minutes instead of days — which matters especially in industries with traceability requirements.

What we covered

  • Quality is a closed loop, not a final inspection at the end of the line.
  • Connect QMS with production to trace defects back to batch, machine, shift and parameters.
  • Distinguish “detecting defective goods” from “eliminating the root cause”.
  • Spot defect patterns by supplier or machine to prevent recurrence.
  • Determine the impact scope of a batch in minutes, not days.
  • Measure defect rate by batch and by machine to act on — not just to report.
